"After Lyco Works asked just a few incisive technical questions, it became clear that we needed to rethink where the technology could be utilized.”

Progress Against Cancer – DNA-Personalized Medicine

August 4th, 2017

In one way or another, very few of us are left untouched by this disease.  As many of you know, it’s been almost a year  since I lost my Dad to cancer (along with several friends, I might add) so I was interested to read in Chemical & Engineering News (C&EN Vol. 95 No. 11 July 3rd, 2017) that a new drug has been approved that treats cancers in any tissue –provided that the patient has a specific genetic profile.  The FDA approval of Keytruda® (Merck & Co.)  illuminates a paradigm shift in the approach to cancer research.  Read the rest of this entry »

New Patent Analytical Tools & Services

July 10th, 2017

In efforts directed at advancing our clients’ abilities to patent protect the consumer experiences (along with the configuration of their inventions,) Lyco Works has augmented patent analysis capabilities through acquisition of a license to PatSnap.  Using this premium tool, we can now search over 122,000,000 patent documents from 119 jurisdictions around the world.  The system also searches non-patent literature — particularly useful for chemical patent work, identification of patents litigated for infringement, and known license agreements.

Data can be synthesized and analyzed in numerous different ways, and graphically summarized to provide both detailed as well as executive summary information.  This technology landscape summarizes around 1,200 patent documents assigned to The Procter & Gamble Co. that include visual, color, and tactile sensation claims.

Patents litigated for infringement are identified with red markers, while known licensed patents are marked in blue. Note the sky-blue “white-space” hiding behind the green patent hill in the foreground… Read the rest of this entry »

Robots, Great and Small

January 17th, 2017

We’re seeing a whole lot of chatter over social media, and in the scientific literature on robotics.  Our world is set to change over the next five to ten years thanks to autonomous vehicles, Artificial Intelligence, and advanced robotics.  We also take a look at some “extreme” robots – those that might not fit into what many would consider a robot…   And, we report on the world’s lamest robot too…

But what about soft & squishy robots?

When we think of robots, we typically think of them built from hard materials, such as plastics or metal — however, Harvard University recently announced a small robotic octopus, which is entirely soft, self powered, and untethered.  Chemically powered by hydrogen peroxide, the eight squishy legs are moved in sets of four at a time using microfluidic controllers within the device.  (C&EN 9/5/2016, New Scientist 9/3/2016)  This is claimed to be the first robot made entirely of non-rigid materials as reported by the journal Nature.

DNA Preservation Technology for Genetically Tailored Treatments – a case study.

September 22nd, 2016

With genetically tailored treatments for cancer and other serious diseases becoming more mainstream, a look back through the DNA of multiple generations within a family will help future physicians better target healthcare plans for patients.  However, once a loved one is cremated, or has been interred, their DNA is essentially lost forever.  Wouldn’t it make sense to sample a loved one’s DNA at the funeral home, prior to cremation or burial?

Family owned and operated Rosedale Funeral Homes Ltd. (UK) engaged Lyco Works to conduct technical due diligence on a novel DNA preservation technique.  “We’d like to offer it to our customers as a service, but we first need to confirm that it’s legitimate technology.  This is a very conservative business.”  Rosedale’s owners commented. Patenting Human Experiences

September 10th, 2016

fotosearch_k5265096

Jason has a publication coming out in the November / December edition of IAM Magazine.  The thesis of the 5,000 word paper is that:

  • it is possible to patent protect human experiences induced by a product or service, and
  • that there are lots of examples in the patent literature, including visual sensations, auditory, and tactile experiences,
  • that patenting the human experience can add another layer of protection to your new product or service
  • patenting the human experience can raise the bar from a technological point of view making it harder for your competitors to follow you.

We are looking forward to hearing your feedback on the article!screen-shot-2016-09-23-at-10-38-40-am

August 2nd, 2015

Are you concerned about the safety of your intellectual assets? Articulating the ins-and-outs of a solid Intellectual Property Strategy poses a unique challenge.
